Here’s the scoop, my most recent first birthday session was ice cream themed and could not have been more fun!
This session included all of my favorite things, ice cream, the color pink, balloons, and an adorable baby! Little Audrey here was only 10 months old at the time of the shoot but that didn’t stop her from celebrating her upcoming first birthday like a champ. I actually really recommend everyone to do your session about 2 months before your child’s first birthday if you’re planning on using the photos for invites or to display at the party. This gives us plenty of time to plan out the session, have the session, edit the photos, meet back up to view them, order prints and products and wait for them to come in, make invites for the party and send them out, and have extra time in case we need to reschedule your session or reveal.
First we chose this pretty pink dress from my wardrobe collection for Audrey to wear, then we picked out one of my many headbands that matched the dress and took a few photos before the cake.
Next, we switched out the headband for this super cute tiara that matched the cake perfectly! Then we added the cake which Audrey couldn’t wait to have fun with.
Now here’s the crazy part, the cake is FAKE! It is a little handmade plaster cake I purchased off Etsy. I’ve been experimenting with fake cakes recently as they add so much convenience to a session. While there is nothing like a baby happily smashing into a real cake these cakes are a great alternative for a baby with food allergies, last minute sessions when we don’t have time to order a custom cake, sessions when we are doing more than one setup and just want a few quick photos with a cake, and they make the cleanup super quick and easy. I simply put some matching icing behind the cake so Audrey still had the chance to have a treat and make a cute mess. Looks real in the photos and I get to re-use the cake again and again!
After the “smash” came the “splash”. Audrey got to have a little bath to clean up, we normally get the happiest shots when we put the babies in the bath, they love to splash around and look at the bubbles. While we do have the parents really blow bubbles at the session, I add most of the bubbles you see below in Photoshop just for a little extra magic.
I absolutely loved doing this theme and I hope to do it again soon. If you would like more information on my cake smash sessions and the other themes I have available you can go here - https://www.mkstallingsphotography.com/firstbirthday
